Some will tell you it is your mattress or the type of base that you have selected that will cause you to have fidgety or sleepless nights. The sleep Gurus will tell you it is your 'mental' state, stress or your less than pleasant sleep milieu or other such malady. Like a lot of people, (my spouse included) I too have suffered this infuriating and pesky problem, until recently when someone introduced me to the Memory Foam Matress products. Well I have not looked back since.
This article looks at why it is that now and then we feel tired, jump into bed expecting to have a great nights sleep, but end up rolling and tossing around for hours, if not all night. It also takes a lighhearted and humorous dig at some of the 'well meaning' advice given to the 'sleep deprived souls of the world'.
If tossing and turning sounds like something you do then you really should consider all aspects of what the problem could be. If you have tried everything you can and have run out of ideas or solutions, and you are still having problems - then maybe, like me, you should give a Memory Foam Mattress or Memory Foam Mattress Topper some meaningful consideration.
So, we all have those nights when we just cannot find the comfortable part of the bed and we spend hours trying to find it by tossing and turning till the break of dawn. The age old question we ask is - Why does this happen?
Seems our desire to 'toss and turn', is not a direct result of not being comfortable, the problem is we are not feeling relaxed. Our minds will happily function without any input from our bodies. What this means is, we tell ourselves that we want to relax, but our minds interpret the message as 'our needing to find a comfortable spot on the bed, or a comfortable spot to lie in, on the bed.'
Relaxation Gurus on the other hand tell us true relaxation has to come from within us, and must be set off by our 'inner thought processes', that is, 'our minds'.
If we are lying in bed, Oh, and I personally prefer a memory foam or latex one myself, and we get the urge to toss or turn, the Gurus say 'wait it out', and we will be surprised at how quickly it fades!
They also tell us when we get the urge to toss and turn, we should ask ourselves - 'How can I focus on something else right now and feel more relaxed?' They tell us that, as we lie there for about 15 seconds, we will be amazed at how the urge to toss and turn simply fades, and we realize that all we really want to do is relax. Well - Not this little black duck, the harder I try asking myself questions, the longer I toss and turn.
Ok, so here are another couple of extraordinary suggestions they advise if our urge to move is really intense, or if we are in a very uncomfortable position on our bed:
1) Move very slowly. We should try to remember what it feels like when we wake up in the morning and we are very sleepy - we do not tend to move very quickly, do we ?
2) As we move very slowly, we now need to put a big bright smile on our face, and take a deep breath. Are you kidding me!!
If the reason why tossing and turning keeps us awake is because we do it very quickly, and the more we do it, the more it agitates us, then this I can understand!
But, as to how I am perhaps going to go to sleep just because I now have put a big, bright smile on my face, leaves me a little cold and in serious doubt that these guys know what they are talking about.
Tossing and turning is an often experienced occurrence for most of us. There are nights when no matter what we just keep tossing and turning all through the night. So, what is worrying us? Everything!..My solution get up, watch tv, have a cuppa, wake someone else up 'misery loves company', ring a friend!!!
Or, you could comtemplate taking a look at the age and condition of your bed. Go get yourself a new one. Go try one out, see if that makes a difference. Pop on into a Serta Mattress store and spend some valuable time lying around for a while.
If you invest in a new memory foam bed, mattress, mattress topper or another type or style of bed and you still have problems....Then go for a run, clean the house..Get some physical actvity happening. Wear yourself out somehow, or go see the doctor and get some sleeping tabs.
I read somewhere (advice from another sleep Guru) that it seems, if we are a certain personality type, then we are fated to be a nuisence to ourselves and anyone else in our beds or bedrooms, seems we are stuck with it, and tossing and turning becomes a never ending process for us that we have little hope of stopping.
And, on that happy note I am off to lie on my comfortable, dreamy Serta Memory Foam Mattress to catch a few zzzzz's, while the rest of you doomed 'night owls' out there try and figure out some way of getting some sleep.
